Foundation is one of the most important cosmetics that you must invest on. After clear skin, your foundation becomes the canvas of all the makeup that you will apply next.
In choosing the right foundation, the first thing to do is ask yourself what kind of coverage you need. What most women look for a foundation is something that can give them adequate coverage but spares them from looking unnatural.
I’ve only tried a couple of liquid foundations, ranging from high-end to low-end. I always like to try the inexpensive ones (drugstore brands) first before advancing onto the more expensive ones. That’s how I came upon Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation during a spree to the department store. As we all know, Revlon is one of the well-known drugstore brands in the US and we’re lucky to have it locally available in the Philippines.
I bought their Colorstay foundation without even testing it because I was already sure of my “buff” shade, and because they didn’t have a tester for that shade. At that time, I wasn’t sure if this foundation would meet my expectations, primarily because it’s a drugstore brand (sadly, most drugstore brands don’t work well on me). But anyway, when I bought it, I was slightly expecting something good and wishing for it to work because it’s inexpensive.

I tried it on. I was really amazed on how it looked on my skin. It evened out my skin and made me look so flawless. Here is the list of reasons why I loved it.
What I like about Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation:
- It has buildable coverage from medium to full coverage
- Despite the full coverage, it looks natural on my skin
- Coverage is good enough to cover acne scars and blemishes
- Evens out my skin tone, making it look smooth, pore-less and flawless
- Good oil control and it doesn’t oxidize on me
- Perfect shade match (it’s Buff for me). Its yellow tone/base makes it suitable for Asians
- Matte finish
- It stays on forever. No kidding, I once had it on for more than 12 hours and I still looked fresh with all the makeup still intact
- Waterproof and sweat-proof
- Doesn’t break me out, doesn’t clog pores
What I don’t like about Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation:
- It has the tendency to look cakey
- It has this overpowering smell at first, but it disappears after a short while so it’s not really a problem except if you’re sensitive to smell
- It dries too quickly, so make sure to blend it on as fast as you can
- Packaging. There is no pump in its glass container, making it hard to get the foundation especially when there’s about ¼ of the product left
- For a drugstore brand, it’s kind of expensive here in the Philippines
Make sure to moisturize your skin first and wait for the moisturizer to be absorbed before applying this foundation. Some people say that you can mix it up with moisturizer to thin out the foundation so you can spread it easily, while some say you can put it on right after you moisturize. Both of those tips didn’t work well for me. I tried mixing it up with moisturizer but it just looked cakey. I also tried to apply it just right after I moisturize, but it just settled on my face because it was difficult to blend.
So what I do is, I put on my moisturizer, wait for it to get absorbed (I blow dry my hair first or pick which clothes to wear), then apply it using a dry sponge. And because the skin is well-moisturized, it would blend effortlessly. I know this applies to a lot of liquid foundation, but I know some products that blend well on skin without having the need to moisturize. Revlon Colorstay is not one of them, so please don’t forget to moisturize.
It also has the tendency to cake up. Because it blends well on my skin, I don’t notice that I’ve already applied it a bit on the heavy side (happened to me once or twice), and that’s when it starts to cake. Apply sparingly, don’t overdo it.
This is my current favorite foundation and I actually finished two bottles already and currently on the third one.
I can’t say it’s the most perfect, but as long as it does the job, I’ll continue to use it. I would repurchase for my fourth bottle because it’s the foundation that I reach out to the most every time I go out, and maybe after finding the perfect foundation, I’d still buy this because it’s an inexpensive product that really delivers.
