Nail Art Tutorial: Checkered Design
I love nail art!
I do my nail designs & I prefer to do my own design rather than have it done at a salon. I don’t see why you have to spend a lot of money to have great-looking nails if you can just do it at the comfort of your own home.
I’ll teach you one design that I think a lot of people are struggling with…the checkered design. You can do this on your own, trust me! I’ll be walking you through it so go ahead & get your materials.
All you will need would be a 2-way nail art pen.
There are lots of 2-way nail art pens that are available locally. Sassy even has this tiny nail art pen that sells for less than Php 20.
Sorry for the quality of the tutorial pictures. I was on my bed when I was doing my nails & since I was very comfortable, I didn’t wanna stand up to snap some pics. Hehe.
I do my nails on my bed.
See?…another reason why you shouldn’t spend money on salons. LOL.
By the way, for tutorial purposes, I used acrylic as my medium since this dries faster, but nail art pens are very much welcome! In fact, I started doing nail art designs with nail art pens. I started using acrylics because one time I ran out of it & saw my acrylic paints sitting on the corner (I paint) & thought of using it…the rest is history!
So, use your nail art pens in this tutorial. If you don’t have a nail art pen you can just use your regular polish, just make sure that you have a liner brush to be able to do the lines,ok?
With that out of the way, let’s start with the tutorial.
1. Choose your preferred base color.

In my case, since I love Wet n Wild’s Night Prowl it is the one that I used. Don’t you think that this looks really pretty? It’s a black jelly with lots of purple glitters! It works really well with my skin tone because it makes my skin look lighter.
Oh, let me add, this is one of those polishes that looks good on short nails! I assure you because I had already cut my right nails & used this. For some reason it looks prettier on short nails. Hahaha! Love this polish so much!
Anyway, going back…sorry, I got excited for a while there. Hehe.
2. Using a red nail art pen, make 2 vertical lines as shown.

Again, you can use your nail art pens. You can even choose a different color to work with on your design.
3. Make horizontal lines at the top of your vertical lines.

I put 3 lines on my pointer & middle finger so you’ll see the difference between designs that have more lines as opposed to those that have less. But if you are not comfortable yet with your skill, then just go for 2 lines instead.
4. Using a white nail art pen, lightly trace the outside line of the red vertical lines.

There’s a technique to using your nail art pen. You can make think & thin lines with it. Make sure that the consistency of the polish is runny. If you use a somewhat heavy hand, you’ll come up with thick lines & when you use a light hand you’ll end up with thin lines like what I made. So practice your lining skills.
^_~
5. Then you trace the horizontal lines with the same white color to finish it off.

You’re almost done! At this point you can actually finish it up with top coat already. I think it looks beautiful as it is.
6. Since I wanted it to have a 3d look, I then used a silver glitter polish to add lines for a more profound effect.

Though I think it looks better without the glitters though…. Wahahaha!
You can add some stickers at the sides if you want to add a cute factor, like I did.
Hope you’ll try out this checkered design soon.^_^
