MAC Russian Red Lipstick Review

MAC Russian Red Lipstick Review

Red is one of the very few lipstick colors that never get old. Pink, fuchsia or orange-colored lipsticks might look off sometimes to some people, but red lipstick guarantees to be universally flattering. Many people are intimidated to wear red lipstick because they think it won’t look good on them. Some even have doubts to wear red as they say wearing red lipstick makes them look older than they are. I say, red works well on every skin tone, especially if worn properly and of course, if given the right shade.

There are a few things to be considered in choosing the red lipstick that would look best on you. With the right shade of red, it can make your teeth appear whiter and brighter, while some can bring out the teeth’s yellow tones. Some look glamorous and sophisticated in a blue-toned shade of red, while some can look haggard. Some reds make ladies look younger, while some admit that they looked a lot older when they wear red. So, it’s best to try them on and carefully choose before your purchase. I have tried a handful of red lipsticks and found myself reaching for this certain shade of red.

MAC Russian Red, according to MAC Cosmetics website, is an intense-bluish red-colored lipstick. This is the reason behind why my teeth appear white while wearing this shade.

What I like about MAC Russian Red Lipstick:

  • It is matte.
  • Highly pigmented
  • The shade is classic and suits my skin tone very well, MAC NC20 for reference.
  • Staying power is superb (without eating or drinking)
  • It doesn’t make my lips dry.
  • It doesn’t “bleed” even without any primer or lip liner.
  • I love that I can wear this in any occasion, day or night.
  • It is blue-based so it makes teeth appear whiter.
  • Brightens up my face

What I don’t like about MAC Russian Red Lipstick:

  • Applying very boldly could make you look like a clown. Honestly.
  • Color fades a little after eating or drinking, but it’s nothing that a reapplication can’t fix.

Tip:

If you want the color to stand out, I suggest lightly patting concealer or powder on your lips before applying lipstick.

Overall:

I love that I can decently wear this lipstick everyday. If I want to wear this during the day, I apply it very lightly so my lips would only have a certain hint of red. During the night time, I apply it more intensely, but not too much to avoid the “clownish” effect. I have read a few articles before that advice warm skin toned women to wear warm-toned lipstick. My skin shade is warm-toned, but this cool-toned lipstick suits me best, so I highly suggest testing the shade first because you wouldn’t know what could look good on you. I love that this lipstick, however matte, doesn’t make my chapped lips appear drier, but of course, there are ways to prepare your lips before applying lipstick to make the lipstick last long and look best.

Would I repurchase? Maybe, because I wouldn’t know if I’ll ever finish this tube. But hygiene-wise, I would repurchase this after its shelf life.

Russian Red is definitely on my list of MAC lipsticks to try, even though I don’t wear red lippies often. It seems to complement your skin tone. :)

This has a dupe, NYC Ultra Moist Lipwear in Retro Red. It’s only 99 cents in the US. Mac has, of course, a better texture, but I like Retro Red too–it’s creamy and pigmented. And it does look good on my yellow-toned skin too!

I’ve been eyeing this colour for a while now! I should just get it right? lol

  4. Ida says:

I should probably just get this too! Haha.

Hey everyone, it’s really a good buy! The color looks good on all skin tones. I didn’t even hesitate to buy it because it suits me well whether I’m pale or tanned. :)
