How to Wear Printed Shorts

I find myself wearing shorts around half of the year. They’re just so easy to wear and usually it’s too hot to wear anything else. I have a number of pairs in denim, khaki, and some other plain fabrics, but recently I got some printed ones. I got them because the print looked cute! But then I was like, uh, what do I wear this with anyway? I’ve since tried it on with different stuff and looked at wonderful fashion blogs and wanted to share some ideas on how to wear printed shorts.

The easiest option is to wear them with a plain shirt or tank top. This is a great way to highlight your printed shorts. White is something that I reach for most often because it’s so versatile and goes with so many colors, but you can also consider the colors in the print of your shorts, and go for a top in one of those colors.

Or you can go the complete opposite and pair it with a printed top. Valerie has some doable, sensible tips here for wearing print on print outfits—one of her pieces of advice is to pair prints that are in the same family or have a similar element. Observe how Whitney Port, above, paired shorts and a shirt which both have black and white color schemes. What she’s wearing looks pretty fun but it still looks relatively pulled-together.

You can also wear it with a blazer or kimono jacket. I’d go for one in a plain but fun color, and again in a shade that’s in a similar one or complements one of the many in your printed shorts. I really like the chic look above with the bright-colored blazer. It looks great with the floral shorts and the white and black everything else balances out the look. Good too for the current rainy weather, it can get a little damp out and for when the aircon gets chilly.

I think the combo of floral shorts + denim shirt looks sweet and relaxed. Add a pair of sunglasses and pastel-colored sneakers (or peep toe sandals, like the model’s wearing above) and you’re done. I’ve yet been able to find a denim shirt or top (not like the one in the photo though, more like one that’s got long or 3/4 sleeves) that feels lightweight and comfortable enough to me though…any recommendations where to look for one?
I think throwing printed shorts into the mix is a good way to have some fun with what you’re wearing, especially for someone like me who’s mostly into basics because I tend to be a very casual, and at times, lazy dresser. Lots of combinations to play with and it’s not as hard to find things to wear it with as I originally thought!
