How to Wash Different Types of Fabric

How to Wash Different Types of Fabric

Coming home with a bunch of new clothes after a day of shopping, then going through the new purchases and organizing them—I love that. I find it especially delightful nowadays because my interest in fashion’s been rekindled. But you know what sucks? When one of your new items come back misshapen, discolored, or no longer perfect after being washed, hung, or dried incorrectly! Totally upsetting. To prevent that from happening, it’s always best to look up how to wash and care for a certain kind of fabric if you’re not sure how to. Here are some tips on how to wash different types of fabric.

  • Silk

Since silk is rather delicate, generally it should be hand-washed, unless the laundry label of the item says that it can be machine-washed or has to be dry cleaned. Wash it by hand gently and do not leave it to soak. It also shouldn’t be wrung or twisted when being dried, since doing that can damage silk. Instead, spread it flat on a towel, and pat it firmly hand towel, another towel, or a sponge, then put it on a hanger. Do not expose it to direct sunlight because this can make silk fade or go yellowish (didn’t know that before).

  • Cotton

Cotton’s pretty easy to wash and care for. It can be machine-washed, and put in the dryer, though personally I prefer to hang it to dry instead of using a dryer for it because it seems to make dark and bright-colored cotton fade faster.

  •  Chiffon

Always check for a laundry label and what it indicates because different types of chiffon have different ways of recommended wash and care. If there’s no label, you can try hand-washing it gently, taking care to retain the shape of the garment. You can also put it in a mesh bag or delicates bag, then place that with similar fabrics, and not rough ones, like denim, in the machine on a gentle or low cycle. To dry, lay flat on a towel, then roll up the towel to absorb water.

  • Cashmere

Cashmere is a pretty delicate fabric and can be expensive. If there are no cleaning instructions on the label, to be safe, simply have it dry cleaned.

  • Denim

A low maintenance fabric, denim is easy to wash and care for. It can be machine washed, but before putting it in the water, turn it inside out to keep the color of it from fading quickly. It can then be air dried hanging in an upright position.

  • Linen
Linen can be machine-washed on a gentle cycle. However it shouldn’t be tumble-dried as this can shrink the fabric. Air dry it but not in direct sunlight because like silk that may contribute to discoloration of linen.
  • Polyester
Polyester may be machine-dried on a normal setting and put in the dryer under a normal cycle as well.  Do take care though not to use bleach on it because this may turn the polyester fabric yellow.

  • Viscose/Rayon
This type of fabric is semi-synthetic and often has luster to it, a somewhat silky texture, and a lightweight feel. It can both be hand-washed, and machine-washed on a low or gentle cycle. Viscose/Rayon fabric shouldn’t be twisted or wrung because this can make the fabric rip. Hang to dry.
  • Wool

I don’t have much wool in my closet, living in a tropical country, but we do have some in storage in case a trip to a country with a colder climate arises. Wool can easily become misshapen. You may hand-wash wool, but to save time and effort, you can also put it in a mesh bag in a delicate cycle. Wool shouldn’t be placed in the dryer as this can make the fabric shrink or misshapen. Instead, dry it in a similar way as silk and chiffon, just lay it flat on a towel and use another towel to dry.
