Essie’s Mirror Metallics Collection is a summer release, made up of five high-shine, metallic shades. The chief creative director at Essie, Essie Weingarten, was obsessed with the appearance of beautiful foils on the runway and wanted to recreate that reflective quality in nail polish. The Mirror Metallics Collection shades include the standard gold and silver, a blue, purple, and what I picked—a copper, called Penny Talk.
Essie describes the shade as:
an authentic copper metallic
To my eyes the color of Penny Talk has gold tones in it rather than being straight up copper, so it seems to border between rose gold and copper. It’s quite beautiful, and delicate-looking. I haven’t been buying polishes long and don’t have a very big collection, but I have no other polish like this. I was sure I wanted to try the Mirror Metallics, and as I often do, to curb my spending on nail polish, I picked just one shade. I don’t regret choosing Penny Talk at all.
This has a very reflective finish that really does almost look like molten metal on the nails. Overall I find the look of it to be sophisticated, beautiful, and feminine, and definitely not boring. From what I’ve seen of the other shades, they look pretty sophisticated as well.
Taken without flash, in a slightly shaded area
Essie Penny Talk is pigmented and only one coat of it is needed on each nail. It dries very quickly, and it took me a few tries to get the hang of applying it. I had to finish painting a whole nail fast, because when I didn’t and went over a spot on the nail twice, the layer underneath would already be slightly dry and smudge, so I had to re do that nail. I find that doing a single, thickish coat on each nail does the trick. And then if I smudge small areas, I let that dry then put a thin coat over it. In less than 5 minutes this is completely dry.
Another issue I had with this polish is that it shows any imperfection you might have on the surface of your nails, like on mine there are a few tiny nicks I got from removing polish a little roughly. They’ll look pretty obvious with this nail polish on. A ridge-filling base coat should help though.
Essie Mirror Metallics – Penny Talk Nail Polish – Likes:
- The beautiful color.
- The reflective, metallic finish. The combo of this and the color makes the polish pretty different, in my opinion.
- It’s pigmented. One coat is enough.
- Dries very quickly.
- Big 3-free.
- Generally smooth formula.
Essie Mirror Metallics – Penny Talk Nail Polish – Dislikes:
- Can make imperfections on the nail surface more obvious.
- Smudges when you go over an area twice.
- I have to order it online. Ordered it from Digital Traincase for PhP 420.
This is a sophisticated, gorgeous nail polish that’s different enough. I find the combination of the feminine color and the striking metallic finish pretty cool.
