9 Ways to Wear a Plain White Shirt
Plain white crew neck and vneck shirts have become a favorite of mine, which makes sense because they suit my laidback fashion sense and they let me feel like I’m able to breathe and remain cool in our hot climate. I also have like five plain white tank tops in my closet. At times though, a plain white tee can look and feel very…plain. I find myself thinking up ways to dress it up sometimes. Found out that you just gotta pair it with the right stuff.
Here are 9 ways to wear a plain white shirt.
First, if you’re like me and usually wear your shirt untucked, try tucking it in for a change. It seems like such a small act, but there’ll definitely be a change in the look of your outfit. To me this makes an outfit look more crisp and neat. Try tucking it into a pair of belted regular or highwaisted shorts. I’ll try doing this…when my beer belly gets smaller.

Layer it with other tops. Lots of possibilities to choose from here. You can pair a loose white tee with neon-colored tank tops or halter/spaghetti strap tanks worn underneath. Or perhaps put a cropped top over a fitted white shirt. A vest. A sweater if you’re somewhere cold. Kimono jackets. One of my favorite things to wear over a plain white tee or tank is a plaid button down shirt worn unbuttoned—it just feels so relaxed.
A plain white crewneck shirt makes for a nice blank canvas for big, bold, or long chunky necklaces. Wearing it with colorful necklaces and accessories is a good way to add color and design to your top.
Wear it with a skirt! I like how modern a classic white button down shirt looks when paired with a skirt in a graphic or bold print or color. Pretty and polished, with a fun element. Or wear a plain white crewneck tee with a maxi skirt, for a more relaxed feel, such as the animal-print one above.
If you’re feeling a bit cold, shrug on an oversize cardigan or blazer over your plain white tee. Pick a blazer for a more dressed up look, in dark blue, black, mustard yellow, or old rose, shades I’ve been seeing around a lot lately. Opt for oversize cardigans if you’d prefer a more casual vibe. I love neutral colors like gray, black, cream.
Belt it in the middle. You can use a wide belt, or a thin one for a bit of embellishment and to emphasize the waist and create more shape. Good options for belt colors are black and brown.
Or try wearing it under a dress. Remember how it was the in thing to wear a plain white tee under spaghetti-strap dresses in the 90s? Hehe. You can update this look by donning a white, snug-fitting crewneck shirt underneath a strapless, knee-length or mini dress. It can look pretty cute.
See? A plain white shirt doesn’t always have to be completely plain.
