8 Tips for Treating Chapped Lips

8 Tips for Treating Chapped Lips

Good morning everyone! I wanted to share some easy tips for treating chapped lips because this is something I’ve been dealing with lately. I’d been experimenting with various lipsticks and lipglosses for the past consecutive days, and that took its toll on my naturally dry lips. So yeah, here are 8 tips that personally work for me.

8 Tips for Treating Chapped Lips1. Always have lip balm at hand. Keep one in your pocket, or if not there, in something that you often have with you, like your purse, or your cosmetics kit, perhaps. Aside from that one tube or jar you’ll be keeping with you all the time, leave other lip balms at areas you frequent throughout your day, such as, for example, your office desk, car, bedside table, the bathroom, and others, that way, even if you misplace or forget to bring your balm, you often find one stashed where you’re at. I recommend reapplying when the balm you previously applied feels like it’s dried off or lost its effect. Frequent application greatly helps.

8 Tips for Treating Chapped Lips2. Use a balm with SPF during daytime. Whether you’re going out of the house or not, try to make it a habit to swipe on a lip balm with SPF at least twice while the sun is still out. It pays to keep already chapped lips protected from the harsh rays of the sun.

3. Drink lots of water. Drinking lots of water helps keep both the skin and lips hydrated.  It’s important to keep drinking water throughout the day, especially in hot climates like ours here in the Philippines, where you’re likely to lose your body fluids more quickly from sweating. Don’t just drink water when you’re thirsty, and try to meet the recommended 8 glasses a day.

4. Don’t lick your lips. It’s very easy to simply lick your lips when they feel dry and chapped, but don’t. It can bring bacteria to the mouth, and have you noticed how, aside from the initial wetness from the saliva, right afterwards your lips feel just as dry or even dryer. Doing this doesn’t bring about moisturization or hydration. That’s why you should always carry lip balm with you.

5. In the same vein, never bite or peel off the chapped skin. Ah, this is so tempting to do and I can hardly resist doing this myself because the rough, uneven feel bothers me, but I almost always regret it later, because it stings and hurts. It can bleed or get discolored and that definitely looks worse than plain old chapped lips.

6. Avoid using lipsticks and lipglosses for the time being. Instead, try tinted balms. Drying or no, constantly having lipstick or gloss on for the duration of the day takes its toll. While your lips are still chapped, let them rest and steer clear of lip colors.

7. Try not to be in air-conditioning all the time. This would be difficult if you’re in the office most of the day, but at least try to go outside during breaks. If you’re at home, don’t leave the AC turned on the whole day (saves electricity too!). Air-conditioning can dry out the lips big time. It sure does mine when I sleep with the AC on, even with multiple applications of lip balm.

8. Exfoliate! When your lips no longer feel sore from being so chapped, grab your toothbrush or a lip scrub (store-bought or DYI!) and exfoliate to take off the dead skin hanging off. Do this gently, and don’t force off any skin that isn’t ready to come off. Just let it be, apply more balm and follow the other tips, and it’ll rub off in a few days. Make sure to put on lip balm after exfoliating.

If you follow these tips religiously and your lips still remain chapped, well, then you’d best visit a dermatologist because you might be experiencing windburn or an allergic reaction. But if you’ve got a regular old chapped lips, following these tips constantly should work like a charm.
